Abstract

This paper critically reviews the literature on maladaptive parent-infant relationships, and analyzes it in terms of Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological model of development. Types of maladaptive relationships are explored as well as the etiology of the problem in terms of Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological model of development. Types of maladaptive relationships are explored as well as the etiology of the problem in terms of the macro, exo, meso, and microsystems involved. The consequences of these relationships for the physical/motor, social/personality, and cognitive development of infants are described. Finally, existing intervention and prevention efforts are presented, with suggestions for further work in the area.
