Abstract
It is our aim and responsibility to help children become confident communicators in their world. We present a powerful model of language use to children, yet often our talk is perceived by them to be mainly about management - we tell, command or judge when we speak to children and often give them too little time to respond to our questions. To encourage children to use talk as a means of learning,we need to be good listeners. We need to give children our full attention when listening, indicating that what children say has value.
