Abstract
Naval architects today are being asked to provide a new and faster breed of ship. The latest ferries, and increasingly other ships too, are low weight, highly stressed structures relying on dynamic lift to achieve speeds of 40 to 60 knots or more. George Marsh reports on the latest materials developments from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects in Southampton, UK.
