Abstract

When Plato argues in Republic 9 that the philosophic life is the most authentic because it is “filled” more truly by things which “exist more” than other forms of life, some commentators find themselves at a loss to know what he means. Yet Plotinus is surely stranger still, for he seems to suggest that all creativity presupposes that everything be filled not with being, but with seeing. But by “everything” does he mean sensibilia or intelligibilia or both? In this chapter author wants to see if he can make any sense of what Plotinus has to say. My hunch is that he is talking about being or even οὐσία very much inside the tradition of Plato and Aristotle, and so any light that can be shed upon his meaning in III.8 will also be useful for understanding Plato and Aristotle on subject of creation and creativity.
