Abstract
Treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture almost invariably requires surgery, especially in large-breed dogs. Treatment of meniscal tears, with partial or complete meniscectomy, seems to be an important component of any surgical plan. Stabilisation of the stifle joint is another goal of most surgical procedures, although the importance of this and the means by which it is accomplished is a topic of much debate. Extracapsular stabilisation techniques and stifle geometry-modifying osteotomy procedures, of which tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) was the first developed, are currently the most common surgical techniques.
