Abstract

The problem of how the magnetic fields of the Sun and the planets are generated occupies a curious position in modern science. Three centuries ago Edmund Halley suggested that fluid motions inside the Earth might be responsible for variations in the field. However, in the 19th century the laws governing fluid motion and electromagnetic induction were worked out, revealing that the flow of fluid inside the Sun and the Earth was capable of creating magnetic energy.
