Abstract

This article looks at some features of television news, drawing on a series of interviews conducted during the production of an Open University television programme. It looks at the visual and verbal conventions of news, and aims to highlight how and why news can appear so real and convincing. Those interviewed include British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) news practitioners, trainee journalists and the craftspeople involved in producing a spoof news programme for the BBC, The Day Today.
