Abstract

Many graduate programs prohibit Ph.D. hopefuls from holding full‐time jobs, in an effort to ensure graduate students are focusing on their studies. There has been much dialogue around how difficult it is to live on the wages provided in these programs, but little has changed from a policy perspective to either offer higher pay rates for those in Ph.D. programs or more flexibility for grad students to seek outside opportunities.
