Abstract

This paper describes qualitative research into perceived influences on intersectoral collaboration in health promotion. Data were collected through unstructured interviews with voluntary and statutory sector workers in two English districts. Selected findings are summarised, noting the importance of both structural/organisational and interpersonal/process factors. Implications for collaboration are discussed in the light of previous research and theory, including Health for All and Healthy Cities literature. Similarities between the findings and those of recent research into 'healthy alliances' are noted, as are measures intended to encourage, and policies having an impact on, collaboration at local level.
