Abstract
To identify and examine the factors which influence and sustain the development of health care practice. A questionnaire survey. Two hundred and nineteen practitioners in the North East of England whowere actively developing their practice, as identified through the Practice and Service Development Initiative of the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at York University. The reasons for developing health care practice emphasized an intimateknowledge of the local health needs of the patient population and the context of care delivery.
