Abstract

Summary The following article describes a project which aimed to ensure that some staff in a school could offer a supportive group experience to pupils showing signs of unhappiness within their peer group. Change in pupils was evaluated using measures from the B/G steem test of self‐esteem, parental comments and data from teachers. Factors associated with group ethos and approach of facilitators which would make personal growth more likely are discussed. The initial project has resulted in further group work which is described, and which has enabled pupils in need of this support to access it within a mainstream high school setting.
