Abstract

AbstractThis study provides a preliminary inventory of the evidence for ritual density and change at Qumran. Then insights from ritual studies and the study of oral-literate cultures are used to formulate a hypothesis regarding the meaning of Qumran ritual intensity and relate it to the group's religious experience. We learn that ritual exercised measurable hegemony over the people at Qumran, making large portions of their experience "religious" in a certain sense, and that some of their ritual practices set them apart from other Jews. The study also indicates the basis for the group's ritual practices, their interpretation of Jewish scriptures.
