Abstract

The social contract does not support the progression of women and minorities, but community colleges have been an institution of social change by providing access and opportunities for advancement within the community. Over time community colleges have created opportunities that prepared minorities to become a respected member of society and a potential contributor to the community’s wealth. As time has progressed, the mission of community colleges has not evolved. As a gateway to success for urban communities, community colleges must continue the work on ensuring that the priority is not only access but student success.
