Abstract

ABSTRACT The use of downhole Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) tubulars to combat the effects of aggressive corrodents is increasing. Field experience indicates that the significant differences between the more conventional metallic tubulars and FRP tubulars are not clearly understood. This same experience has indicated a need for specialized tools for handling and make-up of FRP tubulars. This paper presents a basic level overview of the material properties of FRP tubulars, including a comparison with K-55 steel tubulars, with emphasis on the impact these properties have on the make-up of the API 8 Round connection. Also presented is a description of a power tong developed specifically for the make-up of FRP tubulars. The discussion will include design parameters, used in the design of this tong, as well as laboratory and field test results.
