Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article explores the way in which the British-German performance collective Gob Squad uses video to transform temporal and spatial relationships in the theatre, using its recent production, Western Society, as a case study. A close analysis of Western Society provides insight into and understanding of Gob Squad's use of video technology and its relationship to live theatre. Drawing from David Jay Bolter and Richard Grusin's concepts of remediation, hypermediacy, and immediacy, the article demonstrates how Gob Squad refashions a YouTube video as a medium and employs video technology to reflect on the interpersonal relationships and the idea of self in a culture saturated with digital media technology. The article also foregrounds the theatre's own mediality as a unique, one-time event that serves as a space for contact between performer and spectator.
