Abstract
The time is right to push global learning beyond primary-school level, says Joel E. Cohen. The benefits could include a dramatically smaller increase in world population by 2050. One of the UN Millennium Development Goals is universal primary education for all children — boys and girls — by 2015. Population biologist Joel Cohen argues that it is time to look to the next step. Universal secondary education is achievable within 25 years, he says. Secondary education motivates people to reduce their own fertility, improve the survival of their children, and care for family health. It can help counter population increase and benefit the environment. Visit Nature Network to discuss the topic further.
