Abstract
Legislation to update U.S. pesticide laws is again slogging its way through Congress, but it's anyone's guess whether this Congress will have any more luck getting a bill passed than the previous one did. The agricultural chemical industry, in particular, does not like the versions now being considered. Issues of pesticide tolerances on food, reregistration fees, groundwater contamination, and indemnification are expected to snarl the bills as work proceeds. The House bill (H.R. 2463) to amend the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide & Rodenticide Act was introduced in May by a coalition of representatives headed by Agriculture Committee chairman E. (Kika) de la Garza (D.-Tex.). Several hearings have been held, and the bill reportedly is ready to go to markup by the full Agriculture Committee.
