Abstract

LKB1 gene encodes serine/threonine protein kinase and leads to Peutz-Jeghers syndrome due to gene mutation. Biallelic inactivation of LKB1 is up to 30 % in non-small cell lung cancer. As tumor suppressor, LKB1 arrests cell cycle and inhibits cell growth. Exogenous LKB1 leads to upregulation of p21 expression in a p53-dependent mechanism, which is mediated by cytoplasmic LKB1 initiating negative regulation of cell growth or nuclear LKB1 directly involved in transcriptional regulation. Alternatively,p53 and p21-independent mechanism of regulating cell cycle by LKB1 is also reported. Key words: Lung cancer; LKB1 ; Cell cycle; p21
