Abstract
During years 1926 to 1976, as the field of dermatology grew in size and excellence, the contributors and their contributions to American dermatology were varied, important, and many. During these years it was especially important to keep the specialty in the mainstream of medicine in patient service and education as well as in science and research. To accomplish this, dermatologists created new ways to meet needs as they arose. I would like to discuss the organizations that I believe have made major contributions to our specialty during these past 50 years, exclusive of the American Dermatological Association (ADA). In chronological order, I will discuss their founding, who founded them, and why they were founded. In 1926, American dermatology was a very small specialty by today's standards. There were two national organizations, the ADA and the Section on Dermatology and Syphilology of the American Medical Association. There was only one
