Abstract
Histogram equalization technique is commonly and widely applied for image enhancement. However, this approach is not suitable for medical images that have the major component of background. It may cause a wash-out effect after histogram equalization for image enhancement. In this paper, a modified histogram equalization algorithm called major component suppression histogram equalization (MCSHE for short) was proposed and demonstrated. In this proposed method, the gray-level of highest probability is considered as background and masked out before applying the traditional global histogram equalization process. Afterwards, a new gray value is interpolated for histogram transformation. From the experimental results, the proposed method is demonstrated to show the excellent image quality in enhancement for visualization without introducing wash-out appearance. Thus, this modified histogram equalization for medical image enhancement without the wash-out effect is helpful and useful in medical applications.
