Abstract

Geopropolis is a different kind of propolis collected by the stingless bee Melipona scutellaris that is made up of plant resins, wax and soil. Its crude extract was cytotoxic to colon cancer cells, however its chemical profile has not been thoroughly studied so far. We used bioguided fractionation against two colon cancer cell lines to purify the major bioactive compounds. We isolated and identified prenylated coumarins, benzophenones and cinnamic acid derivatives from geopropolis. Most of those compounds are found in plants from the genus Kielmeyera (Guttiferae), which is widely distributed in the Northeast Brazil, the area of collection of geopropolis.
