Abstract

The relation of the real world to its symbolic forms is determined by the social and historical contexts. The true nature of this relationship has changed gradually in the current scene mostly due to the recent advances in the digital techonology: new forms of representations mostly in the form of a reproduction, with no relation to their real objects replaced the traditional forms of signification. Reality, as reproduced by mainstream media has become the only basic form of reality, ultimately losing its quality of representing the true. Electronic media play its role in the over growing dominance of image systems that favour the virtual over actual and this transformation is not neutral. The process is tied to the dominant values of the late-capitalist culture that centers around patterns of spectacle and consumption. In this respect, Behic Ak’s text, “The Image Killer” relates, in a critical fashion, the current transformation of images of relality with the contemporary transformation of a society dominated by spectacle and consumer culture. This study aims to analyze how current consumption era relying on systems of simulations of reality and its respective images is represented in “The Image Killer”. While doing this, for being able to benefit from a wider perspective, the critical aproaches whic refer to the sociopolitics of the dominant power relations are used.
