Abstract

The current situation of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and transvestite, queer and questioning, intersex, asexual and other genders and sexual orientations) population in Brazil and in the world cries out for help and exposes the urgent need for assertive attitudes. The scarcity of studies on the LGBTQIA+ theme in the health field and the lack of Brazilian literature on the subject negatively impact the assistance to this population that demands medical, cultural, and social particularities. This study aims to provide reflections and references to those who care, or will care, for LGBTQIA+ families. In a case study, analysis and reflections are present during the various stages of research, particularly when gathering information, data, and evidence. Based on the imminent need to train professionals prepared to care for this population, it presents an allusion to an inclusive and integral care model in health care, emphasizing the LGBTQIA+ population, so that the doors of health care spaces remain open to new family configurations and that when they enter a care setting, they find space, acceptance, welcoming, admiration, competence and respect. We conclude that discrimination affects the quality of care, worsens diagnostic accuracy, patient fidelity, and therapeutic adherence. It is a daily failure in the care of these people. An unprepared professional can further weaken those who are already in a vulnerable condition. Continuous and hard work for equity and normalization of LGBTQIA+ precepts and particularities is necessary.
