These general principleswere intended to be outcome-oriented, non-negotiable competenciesor abilities that are central to medical practice for all specialties.Two seminal publications from the Institute of Medicine, To Err IsHuman: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm:A New Health System for the 21st Century, appeared in tandem and facilitatedthe development of the 6 core competencies, which involve patientcare, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills,practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and systemsbasedpractice (Table 1).
