Abstract

Observations on the maintenance of a snake colony designed for venom collection are presented. The importance of cage temperature and construction, as well as methods of snake handling are described in detail. The authors' method for obtaining coral snake venom, venom extraction procedures, apparatus and concepts on proper feeding are included. In addition, techniques for shipping and isolation of newly acquired snakes, with a discussion on detection and prevention of disease are presented.
