Abstract
Exterior appearance of rolling stock is one factor which affects the passengers' perception of a rail service. The paper will describe the technology behind maintaining a good image, taking into account protective coatings and their application, liveries, soiling of surfaces and cleaning. Coatings must provide corrosion protection throughout the working life of the vehicle in an aggressive environment. This requires adequate treatment of many areas not seen by the passengers or, in many cases, by engineers during normal maintenance.
