Abstract

The main trends in research on tribology in the U.S.S.R. are given in this brief review. The results of the theoretical and experimental investigations for studying the mechanical and physicochemical processes in friction contact are discussed. Much attention is given to the search for novel engineering solutions and the development of progressive technology. The methods for reducing friction and wear, application of magnetic fluids in sealing devices and bearings and improving lubricants are described in the present work. Methods for making wear-resistant materials and the application of strengthening technologies and coatings to improve their tribological properties are considered.
