Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyze the activities of theOdessaeducational district trustees during the first half of the XIX century in the context of personal history, using materials of published sources from funds of Scientific Library of Odessa Mechnikov National University and archival documents from the Odessa Region State Archive and the Russian State Historical Archive. Biography studies methods, a historical-comparative method and a comprehensive analysis of information from historical sources let us to research the milestones of life and activities of trustees of the Odessa educational district N. F. Pokrovsky, D. M. Knyazhevich, and M. N. Bugajsky, to consider successes and miscalculations of their work, as well as their role in the reforming of the Richelieu Lyceum, distributing of primary and secondary educational schools in the area, the development of the local periodical press, the establishment of scientific societies. The author also identified the personal contribution of each of the Odessa educational district trustees in the development of education in the region, arguably proving prominent role of D. Knyazhevich as the most active and successful leader. On the contrary, in the memoirs of contemporaries M. Bugajsky was regarded as much less effective in this field.
