Abstract

1. Uric acid is the main nitrogenous constituent of the urinary excreta of a group of lizards and snakes forming 54.55% to 67.51% of the total excretory nitrogen. 2. Excretion of the insoluble uric acid as a main nitrogenous end product helps these animals for water conservation as they live under xerophilous conditions of low water intake. 3. Allantoin is present in the urinary concretions of lizards and absent from that of snakes. 4. Uric acid represents the end product of protein metabolism, and in lizards, allantoin should be a accepted as representing the line of purine metabolism.
