Abstract

The historical retrospective proposed by this research highlights the changes that occurred in the healthcare system of Bukovina, with significant effects on the pharmacy profession. The economic and social challenges and the ambition to align with the progressive realities of the empire were reflected in the “pharmacy business”, even if the number of pharmacists was small, as were the opportunities for business expansion. The complicated and confusing professional status and some moderation in addressing the problems of the domain delayed the adoption of encouraging measures both for the pharmacists and patients. The old press and medical reports reveal the situation of the pharmacies in Bukovina, as well as the names of those who practised pharmacy or ran a business that was “more than a shop”. These documents bring to attention the pharmacists who distinguished themselves either by their professional merits, generosity and charitable works or by some events with a more or less happy ending. In addition, the article presents the historical/chronological evolution of pharmacies and how they have been allowed to function in Bucovina.
