Abstract

To the Editor. —I hope that a lapse in attention caused the publication of Letter From New Delhi1 rather than fear of accusations of xenophobia. The TM movement makes false medical claims. Among them are longevity to infinity, levitation, the power of meditation to alter weather patterns, and correction of a number of medical conditions (a mild reduction in blood pressure may occur, but it is not permanent nor can one be removed from medication). The TM system also extracts extraordinary fees (over $200 for the privilege of a three-syllable mantra). These false claims did not appear in the article, but a collection of dubious results of pulse diagnosis and herbal and dietary treatments did. Although some of the results have been published, they have not been validated by independent observers. They are inconsistent with scientific knowledge and method.
