Abstract
The result of Cheng and Dashen: σ NN ≈ 110 MeV is in agreement with a smooth behavior of the π − N amplitude, and consistent with (3, 3) breaking of chiral SU(3) ⊗ SU(3), with almost exact SU(2) ⊗ SU(2). This result is also found to give a strong suggestion for an approximate scale invariance of hadron dynamics.
