Abstract

Characterization of the minor elements in run-of-mine and clean coals from Eastern Kentucky and Virginia preparation plants shows that average reductions in concentrations exceeding 90% are achieved for several elements, including some of those listed as potential air toxics in coal combustion. The absolute levels of minor elements vary between and within coal beds depending upon the proportion of different coal lithotypes and rock types within the run-of-mine feed to the preparation plant. Further variables in element concentrations arise from the size and association of minerals within the coal matrix and the efficiency of the cleaning process.
