Abstract

Summary The current methodology to calculate magnitudes of induced seismic events in the Netherlands is based on Local Magnitudes derived from the Groningen area. We show that the Moment Magnitudes estimated from surface stations are consistent with the Local Magnitudes of KNMI catalogue obtained with downhole sensors. The Moment Magnitude can be generally applied anywhere, using both near and far stations, installed at surface or in boreholes, without pre-recorded seismicity but it requires a good knowledge of the velocity and attenuation models.
