Abstract

Standard band-averaging techniques used for representing magnetotelluric data are subject to bias from spurious estimates unrelated to Gaussian noise. Consequently complex curve fitting techniques have been suggested to provide an alternative representation. Suspect bands can be eliminated and representative data can be obtained by interpolation using complex polynomials. The Levy algorithm adopted here has the additional benefit that it can be used for archiving to approximate band averages obtained using existing software.
