Abstract

A general purpose, two dimensional finite element program is adapted for electromagnetic analysis. Magnetostatic characteristics including flux density, field intensity, and inductance can be found using the numerical solution of Maxwell's equations performed by the finite element program. The characteristics of a C core inductor are determined, using magnetic scalar potential and magnetic vector potential formulation of the equations. A nonlinear permeability function is used to account for magnetic saturation of the inductor core. The results are compared against known parameters as determined by another electromagnetic analysis program. Success of the method verifies its applicability to more complex electromagnetic devices. >
