Abstract

The magnetoplasma diffusion equation of the F2-region of the ionosphere is derived in its primitive form, allowing for electric currents flowing between conjugate points of the dynamo region, and for temperature variations. It appears that the standard view of the ambipolar diffusion problem is correct. The ion-electron pairs may be thought of as sliding down the magnetic field lines with diffusive motion, while the whole field line drifts at right angles to itself. The electric current along a field line would affect the ionization only if its magnitude were 1000 times greater than Dougherty's estimate of 10 −7 A/m 2.
