Abstract

This review is concerned with recent work on magnetooptics in magnetic materials. Primarily it is organized around magnetooptical (MO) rotation, magnetic linear birefringence and light scattering from magnetic excitations. Examples are quoted of work using each of these to study such properties as magnetic ordering, magnetic transitions, magnetic specific heat in random systems and elementary excitations in regular and random systems. Beyond the phenomena themselves and their research applications, there has been a continuing interest in technological applications. Interesting examples of these will be sketched briefly.
