Abstract

Two aspects of magneto-optical (MO) spectroscopy in the valence-band energy regime are considered. First, we derive a sum rule expression that links the frequency integrated absorptive part of the off-diagonal conductivity to a part of the orbital moment. Second, we consider the relationship between the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the MO spectrum, on the one hand, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the orbital moment, and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), on the other hand. The MAE is related to the anisotropy in the orbital moment through a perturbation theory expression. The latter is in turn connected to the anisotropy in the MO spectrum through the derived sum rule expression. As examples we investigate, in particular, the ordered compound FePd, and also CoPd, FePt, and CoPt.
