Abstract

Magnetoelectric effect has been studied in cylindrical composites with a negative magnetostrictive/piezoelectric/positive magnetostrictive Ni/Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/FeCo trilayered structure. The magnetostrictive layers are in direct contact with the piezoelectric layer by electroless deposition. Compared with that of the Ni/Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/Ni and FeCo/Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/FeCo cylinders, the ME voltage coefficient of the Ni/Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/FeCo cylinders is enhanced. The reason for the ME enhancement can be ascribed to the compressive stress on the Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 layer induced by the contraction of the outer negative magnetostrictive Ni layer and the expansion of the inner positive magnetostrictive FeCo layer. The result is helpful for the optimal design of magnetoelectric composites toward practical application.
