Abstract

We present magnetostriction measurements on dilute magnetic alloys. Systematic investigation has been performed on monocrystals through the silver–rare earth and gold–rare earth series. The results present very different behavior from one RE to another, but we obtain a very good agreement with a single ion model; we deduce the magnetoelastic coupling parameters which appear to be quite constant along the series and clearly in contradiction with the prediction of a point charge model. Measurements on a (LaAg)Tb single crystal give similar results and we are able to explain some surprising observations obtained on polycrystalline (YPd3)RE alloys.
