Abstract

The magnetoelastic contribution to elastic properties in rare-earth (RE) paramagnetic garnets R 3Ga 5O 12 and R 3Al 5O 12 for the heavy RE ions from Tb to Yb is investigated. For the available crystal field parameters the temperature dependences of strain susceptibilities of RE ions have been calculated. The low temperature anomalies of the elastic modules are predicted after analysis of numerical calculation data.
