Abstract

Single-crystalline gadolinium was examined employing both uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure with special attention to the spin-reorientation transition. A “temperature vs. pressure” magnetic phase diagram was established in both cases and a three-dimensional magnetic phase diagram “temperature vs. hcp crystalline lattice parameters a and c” was derived. An extrapolation of this phase diagram suggests a complete suppression of the spin-reorientation transition under minor expansion of the gadolinium crystalline lattice, constituting a novel phase boundary.
