Abstract

From singular point detection measurements, it is shown that the rare-earth contribution to the uniaxial anisotropy in (Y1.0Tm0.8)(Fe8.4Co9.0) and (Pr1.0Lu0.8)(Fe8.4Co9.0) compounds reinforce each other in the (pr1.0Tm0.8)(Fe8 .4Co9.0) compound. This effect is related to 2d site-preference for Pr and 2b site-preference for Tm in the hexagonal Th2Ni17 structure. Second-order crystal field coefficients are estimated to be A20(2d)=(70±20) Ka0-2 and A20(2b)=(-110±10) Ka0-2. First-order magnetization processes are observed in the praseodymium-containing compounds below about 220 K.
