Abstract

Various slightly differing Er3+ sites in stoichiometric LiNbO3 have been characterised using optical measurements of the Zeeman effect and of the magnetic circular dichroism of the absorption (MCDA), together with the optical detection of the EPR by microwave-tagging of the MCDA. For three distinct Er3+ sites the g∥-values have been determined for the ground and a large number of excited states. The technical requirements for directly correlating site-selective optical and EPR spectroscopic data have been clarified for arbitrary directions of the magnetic field B relative to the crystal main axis.
