Abstract

Abstract Bi-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi 1.8 Y 1.2 Fe 5 O 12 ) nanoparticles were prepared by coprecipitation method with ultrasonic irradiation. Their particles were dispersed in the organic binder, and then coated on glass substrate by a spin coater. The magnetic and magneto-optical properties of the particles and thin films were investigated. The particle size was below 20 nm and the saturation magnetization was 17 emu/g. Faraday rotation ( θ F ) of the thin films was observed in the region of the wavelength from 410 to 520 nm and figure of merit ( θ F / α ) was ranged from 0.5 to 3.2.
