Abstract
Ho films and Ho/Y superlattices were fabricated and characterized structurally and magnetically. Anomalies in the magnetization vs field applied along the easy axis identify magnetic phase transitions, as found in bulk Ho, but with enhanced critical fields. The critical fields required to magnetize the samples vary systematically with the total Ho fraction in a manner that is shown to be consistent with the assumption that the Ho and Y layers are magnetoelastically coupled. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
