Abstract
Recent theoretical and experimental results on domain patterns and switching processes in patterned media are reviewed. For thin permalloy islands ∼0.5 to 4 μm in size the domain patterns observed correspond closely to theoretical expectations, showing a variety of closure domain configurations. Thin film islands ∼0.2 μm in size of hard magnetic materials are typically single domain in remanence. Coercivity fields show a wide dispersion in all cases, for both hard and soft materials.
