Abstract

The magnetization processes of two-dimensionally periodic and nanometer-scale Co dots formed on a reconstructed Au(111) surface were explored utilizing the magneto-optical Kerr effect. The magnetization processes were affected by the size of the Co dot. At room temperature, superparamagnetic behavior was observed below about 0.5 ML Co coverage, about 35 Å dot diameter. A ferromagnetic transition of the whole system was visible above about 1.1 ML.
