Abstract

Magnetic properties and crystal structure of GdTi 1− x Mn x Ge (0≤ x≤0.6 and x=1) have been studied. The refinement of the structure has shown that GdTi 1− x Mn x Ge crystallises in the tetragonal CeScSi type of structure, modified for 0.1≤ x≤0.6, whereas GdMnGe has the orthorhombic TiNiSi type of structure. For x≤0.6 the compounds order ferromagnetically at relatively high temperatures reaching 430 K. For x≥0.2 a more complex magnetic behaviour has been observed with at least two transitions. This behaviour has been attributed to the magnetism of Mn atoms. The temperature dependence of the susceptibility of GdMnGe points to antiferromagnetic character of ordering with two transitions at 102 and 337 K.
